Herpes simplex virus and atopy in Finnish and Russian Karelian children.

چکیده
Although the focus in the context of the hygiene hypothesis in explaining raised atopy prevalences has largely shifted from pathogens to commensals and saprophytes, the role of pathogens cannot be wholly ignored. Many pathogens are able to establish persistent or chronic infections, and have evolved strategies for immune evasion. A common immune subversion strategy used by such pathogens involves the increased production of the regulatory cytokines interleukin (IL)-10 and/or transforming growth factor-b by innate immune cells or via the generation of regulatory T (T-reg)-cells [1]. These cytokines, by inhibiting/downregulating the function of antigen-presenting cells and effector T-cells, appear, in turn, to be crucial for the development of tolerance against allergens.

Common environmental chemicals do not explain atopy contrast in the Finnish and Russian Karelia
BACKGROUND Atopic allergy is much more common in Finnish compared with Russian Karelia, although these areas are geographically and genetically close. To explore the role of environmental chemicals on the atopy difference a random sample of 200 individuals, 25 atopic and 25 non-atopic school-aged children and their mothers, were studied. Atopy was defined as having at least one positive skin pr...

Background and objective: Langerhans cell histiocytosis (LCH) is a rare histiocytic proliferative disorder of unknown etiology and mainly affects young children. The histological feature is granuloma-like proliferation of langerhans-type dendritic cells. Although the possible role of viruses such as Epstein-Barr virus (EBV, Human Herpes virus -4</...
متن کاملThe Changing Epidemiology of Herpes Simplex Virus Type 1 Infection: The Associated Effects on the Incidence of Ocular Herpes
Herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1) with a worldwide distribution has been reported in all human populations, resulting in a clinical spectrum of infections. Although HSV type 2 (HSV-2) is known as the most common cause of genital herpes, an increasing number of cases with genital herpes are caused by HSV-1. The present study aimed to discuss the changes in the epidemiology of HSV-1 infection i...
متن کاملTzanck smears in herpes simplex virus infections
Background: The diagnosis of herpes simplex virus may requirevirological confirmation. Tzanck smear is an old, rapid, costeffective but nonspecific method that has been recently re-evaluatedas a method for the diagnosis of herpes virus infection. This studywas conducted to compare Tzanck smear and viral culture in thediagnosis of herpes simplex virus infection in patients clinicallysuspected to...
متن کاملSerological evidence of herpes simplex virus infection in atopic eczema.
Twenty three of 113 patients (20%) with atopic eczema had neutralising antibodies to herpes simplex virus compared with 34 of 113 matched controls (30%), an insignificant difference. This suggests that children with atopic eczema are no more likely to acquire herpes simplex infection than normal children.
